Applying: What you should do...

1. Make an appointment with a guidance counselor to discuss your applications. Secondary school report forms should be filled out by guidance.

2. Essays/personal statements should be typed and proofread by an adult before being sent to a college.

3. A COLLEGE APPLICATION IS INCOMPLETE UNLESS A HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT IS MAILED TO THE COLLEGE. Applying on-line means you do your part on-line. Transcripts and recommendations are still sent by mail. For us to mail anything to a college, you must give us a stamped envelope addressed to the college.

4. PRIORITY DEADLINE: DECEMBER 1st. Anything received after December 1st will be sent out but not necessarily before Christmas vacation. Applications are sent out in the order they are received. There are no exceptions to this.

5. If you think you may be eligible for HEOP/EOP/SEEK/College Discovery, based on family income or for fee waivers, see a counselor.

6. Getting applications: We have, or will soon have, SUNY ad CUNY applications. Others you must get directly from the school. The fastest way to do this is go online and print them. A college’s web-site is generally www.collegename.edu. Most students apply to about 5 colleges. You can apply to as many as you like. However, be aware of your grades and the academic requirements of the schools you are considering. Also be aware of cost. At least one should be a ‘safe’ school – which is a school you know you will be admitted to and can afford. We strongly recommend that you apply to CUNY for this reason. You will be admitted to at least one CUNY school and tuition is low. Also, consider SUNY and local Catholic colleges such as St. Francis and St. Joseph’s whose tuition is much lower than most private colleges.
Other Things

Financial Aid: All colleges require the FAFSA. We will receive a FAFSA work sheet and go over it with you in December. You cannot submit this before January 1st. Some schools may require the CSS/Profile form as well and/or have their own form. Check with the colleges. Generally the earlier you apply to college and fill out the FAFSA the more money you end up getting. Often students get less money from a school simply because they applied late.

Scholarships: There are many “outside” scholarships for which you can apply. Do not give a person or organization money even if they promise/guarantee they will find scholarships for you. You may do a free scholarship search at www.fastweb.com. You may also stop by the Guidance Office for help with this. For school scholarships, apply early and submit financial material as early as you can.
