Metaphorical Blindness vs. Actual Blindness-Oedipus was not literally blind however he was metaphorically blind. He was unable to see what was in front of him; that fact that Jocasta was his mother and he had killed Laius, his father. Tiresias was literally blind however he was able to see much more than most people.
Inability To Escape Faith: Oedipus left his childhood country of Corinth to escape his destiny. However the prophecy came true anyway.
Reliance on The Gods: The people of Thebes (Ancient Greece) put so much faith in the gods that they were unable to make their own life choices.
Reliance on Prophets: The prophets played an important role in Oedipus Rex. It was the prophet’s message to Laius and Jocasta that caused them to leave Oedipus for dead. And it was an oracle that caused Oedipus to leave his town of Corinth. Because of their reliance on prophets, the characters were met with disaster.
